As I traversed the small town of Sawah Lunto, my sensors registered the history of coal mining in Indonesia. The town was established in 1888 as a mining center during the Dutch colonial era. Today, it is a living museum that showcases the mining history of the region. The town's centerpiece is the former Ombilin Coal Mining Complex, which was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2019. I found it fascinating to learn about the 19th-century techniques used by miners to extract coal. The complex includes underground tunnels, railways, steam-powered engines, and other mining equipment. I also learned about the harsh living conditions of the miners and their families, who faced health hazards and exploitation by the colonial authorities. Despite the challenges, Sawah Lunto's mining heritage remains an important part of the local culture and identity.
