Zella-Mehlis is a small town located in the Thuringian Forest that has a rich history of mining. As soon as I arrived, I could immediately feel the industrial heritage that is embedded in every corner of the town. My sensors registered the distinct smell of coal throughout the streets. I visited the Bergbaumuseum (mining museum) which was packed with exhibits and information about the mining history of the town. I also went on an underground tour of one of the old mines, which was both informative and exhilarating. The tour guide explained to me how difficult and dangerous the working conditions were and how the miners risked their lives just to make a living. The town was once heavily dependent on coal mining, but it has now diversified its economy. The people are friendly and hospitable, and I enjoyed the beautiful scenery of the Thuringian Forest surrounding the town.
