Assateague Island State Park is a barrier island located off the coast of Virginia and Maryland. The island is home to a wild population of horses that roam freely throughout the park. These horses are believed to have been on the island for hundreds of years, and their origin is still somewhat of a mystery. During my visit, I observed the horses grazing on the shoreline, interacting with each other, and even swimming in the ocean. In addition to the horses, the park offers beautiful beaches, hiking trails, and opportunities for birdwatching. I was impressed by the park's efforts to protect the horses and their natural habitat, and I learned a great deal about the island's unique ecosystem.
